Runnymede and Weybridge’s Liberal Democrats have labelled the Chancellor’s budget announcement today a “desperate deception”, with income tax bills still set to rise for local people.

Runnymede and Weybridge’s Liberal Democrats have said that local residents will see through this “deception” by the Chancellor and that people don’t want more “empty promises” from this Conservative government whilst “local health services are left on their knees”.

Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Runnymede and Weybridge, Ellen Nicholson said:

“This Budget will barely touch the sides for families and pensioners around here, who are facing soaring mortgage bills while the cost of the weekly shop goes through the roof.

“People in Runnymede and Weybridge know that their tax bills will remain sky high after this budget, and the Chancellor is attempting a desperate deception after years of income tax hikes.

“There was little for Housing or Social Care in yesterday’s budget. People don’t want more Conservative empty promises while our local health services are left on their knees. They want proper change through a General Election so we can kick this Conservative government out of office."

The Resolution Foundation stated This will be the greatest tax-raising Parliament since the Second World War, with tax relative to GDP rising from 33.1 per cent in 2019-20 to 36.5 per cent in 2024-25, and 37.1 per cent in 2028-29 (the highest since 1948). The rise since 2019-20 amounts to £3,900 per household.
