Local power for local people: Lib Dems win energy bill concession

The Liberal Democrats have secured an important victory for local communities in their fight for a greater voice in renewable energy projects. Following persistent pressure from Liberal Democrat peers, particularly Earl Russell, the government has agreed to a significant amendment to the Great British Energy Bill requiring meaningful collaboration with local communities on energy initiatives.

This breakthrough means communities across Runnymede and the UK will have more control over local energy projects, creating new jobs and attracting investment to help build a greener future. The concession aligns with Liberal Democrat priorities of empowering local decision-making and tackling the climate emergency.

Don Whyte, Liberal Democrat Co-Leader of Runnymede Council, welcomed the news: "This victory shows what can be achieved when we put communities first. Local people understand their area's needs best, and now they'll have a real say in shaping sustainable energy projects that benefit everyone."

The achievement follows earlier Liberal Democrat efforts to strengthen the Bill, including Pippa Heylings MP's proposal for an emergency home insulation programme. This would have provided targeted support for households struggling with energy costs while reducing carbon emissions. Despite Conservative abstentions and Labour opposition preventing that amendment from passing, Liberal Democrats continue fighting for practical solutions to both the cost-of-living and climate crises.

The party's vision for community energy projects includes:

  • Supporting local jobs and skills development
  • Keeping benefits and profits within local areas
  • Enabling communities to lead the transition to renewable energy
  • Reducing household energy bills through local generation

This success demonstrates how Liberal Democrats are delivering real change by championing both environmental protection and local democracy - key priorities in our plan for a fair deal for all communities.
