Local Fire Threat!
Local fire services in Runnymede could come under severe pressure as the Conservative led Surrey County Council has decided to close Staines Fire Station. Currently there are 4 fire stations across Runnymede and Spelthorne covering the 2 boroughs.
Additionally, these fire services have to cover incidents on the M25 Junctions 10 to 14 and the M3 Junctions 1 to 3, which are some of the busiest stretches of motorway in Britain.
The service will be cut to 3 fire stations until a new fire station is built between Staines and Ashford. There is real concern that this could put lives in danger, particularly when you consider the weight of traffic at times.
Local Lib Dem Campaigner Don Whyte expressed his concern, saying: "This is very worrying. What happens if there is a serious fire in Runnymede and the engine is on the wrong side of a grid locked Staines bridge, which often happens in busy rush hours? Also, I dread to think what could happen if there was a major incident on the M25!"
It is shocking that the Lib Dems have to raise the profile of this issue that could put people's lives at risk!
