Parking Under Control in Weybridge

18 Apr 2006

At last, after years of wrangling, charges are being introduced in all the council owned car parks. Charges have been operating successfully in the Weybridge town centre car for many years. They are now extended to Oatlands. Charging in the York Road car park will follow later this year.

The main purpose of charging is to overcome local congestion and inconsiderate use. The money raised helps to pay for the ongoing maintenance and management of the car parks and other services provided by the council.

The other major change is that, since January, responsibility for on-street parking (yellow line and CPZ) enforcement has passed to Elmbridge. Feedback so far indicates that the parking officers are undertaking their duties firmly but sensitively. Their presence is certainly having a positive impact on inconsiderate and illegal parkers.

Your Liberal Democrat councillors fully support these changes. It is something which should have happened years ago but for the intransigence of the residents association councillors running the council and Conservative opposition.
