Runnymede Borough Council Facing Financial Challenges

10 Dec 2023

After seeing the financial difficulties that some Local Authorities are experiencing across the country, Cllr Don Whyte, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, took the opportunity at the Full Council meeting on 7th December, to ask about the current position in Runnymede.

A year ago, at the 2022 December Corporate Management Committee it was identified that RBC needed to make savings of £5.2m by the end of March 2026 in order to deliver a balanced budget for the municipal year 2026/2027.  Can I ask the Leader, why no progress has been made by his Administration in identifying any of the required £5.2m savings?

The Conservative Leader of the Council was unable to provide any tangible details in response and declined to commit to when the proposed savings would come forward for a decision.

Don said afterwards “this is very concerning, difficult decisions need to be made urgently to ensure that the borough does not get into the financial difficulties that other local authorities are experiencing around the country.”

We will continue to press for further details over the coming weeks.
