The future of The Rose and Olive Branch pub hangs in the balance
"The Rose and Olive Branch has been a wonderful local pub under Niki and John Simons' management," says Cllr Rowsell. “While we understand they will be moving on, we're very much hoping that the property may continue serving our community as a pub under new management.”
The pub, which reopened following renovation in August 2023, has been a popular spot for both locals and visitors exploring Virginia Water's extensive walking routes. Despite no shortage of customers, they’ve announced their final trading day will be December 25th, 2024. The situation is especially concerning as Virginia Water has already lost several pubs in recent years, leaving just the Rose and Crown and the Wheatsheaf.
"Virginia Water benefits from having welcoming local pubs," notes Cllr Rowsell. "They're important meeting places that add to our village's character. We look forward to working constructively with any new tenants who may take on The Rose and Olive Branch."
The Liberal Democrats are calling for reform of business rates and additional support for community pubs, in line with our manifesto commitment to "enhance powers over community assets to help local authorities protect pubs, community farms, and other vital infrastructure."
